The Scarlet Pimpernel

This week I have learnt all about a new wild flower, the Scarlet Pimpernel (Anagallis arvensis).

This stunning orange and purple flower caught my eye while walking up the Sussex Downs. It is very easy to spot, despite it’s small size as the colour is so vibrant.

It is considered a weed (why are so many “weeds” so pretty!) and grows abundantly in shallow soils.

It was also the flower associated with the fictional character “The Scarlet Pimpernel”  who featured in books by Emma Orczy.
